Swallowtail Butterflies

Swallowtail butterflies are found all over the world but live mostly in the tropics.  They are brightly colored and have characteristics tail-like projections from their hind wings.  The females look different from the males in many of the species.  They are often spotted near flowers and are attracted to wet soil, pu7ddles, or pond There are many Swallowtail species.  The one I find most interesting is the Black Swallowtail.

Black Swallowtail

This species of butterfly is usually found in open fields and woodland meadows.  They frequent clover and flower gardens and always fly near the ground.  They have variable markings, but they are mostly black with blue and yellow coloring along the edges of the wings.  Some colored spots on the butterfly may be larger and may be orange instead of yellow.
